IHG Rewards Club has current promotion where you earn 100% bonus points when you purchase more than 7,000 points. If you buy 26,000 or more points than the cost comes down to 0.5 cents/point. This promotion is valid till 12/30/2019. Also IHG has increased the purchase limit to 150,000 points for time being. Here is the link to the promo and you will need to be logged in to your rewards account to see the cost of purchase. IHG has a popular PointBreaks promo where you can stay at participating hotels for 5k, 10k or 15k points. The current PointBreaks promo expires on 01/31/2020. We have written about that promo here. The points purchased can provide great value if the location your have plans to visit have IHG hotels that participate in this promo. Do note that there are limited rooms available in PointBreaks promo and the list of hotels and availability dwindles towards the end of PointsBreaks promo period.
In general you can always buy IHG points for 0.6 cents/point if you have 5k points already available in your account. So buying at 0.5 cents/point is only useful if you have firm plans on using those points. Below are the terms of the 100% points purchase promo: "Offer available for purchases made between 12:00 AM ET Nov 22, 2019 and 11:59 PM Dec 30, 2019 inclusive. This is an exclusive, non-transferable offer for intended recipient only and may not be forwarded. Bonus points will be awarded upon completion of the transaction. Bonus points will be awarded to the recipient of the points purchase. Offer is subject to change. Offer cannot be combined with any other offer. Price includes all applicable fees. Purchased Points are not refundable and are applicable toward all IHG® Rewards Club awards. Members may purchase a maximum of 150,000 points per calendar year and receive as a gift a maximum of 150,000 points per calendar year. Please allow 72 hours for points to post and appear in the recipient's account. All other IHG® Rewards Club Terms and Conditions apply." So hopefully you can utilize this promo to get discounted stay rather than paying the full cash rate. Note that IHG points expire after 12 months of inactivity, so again buy them only if you have firm plan to use them. Happy Holidays!! Priority Club (IHG) has released the PointBreaks list for hotel reservations on award night for stay till Jan 31st, 2020. The PointBreaks now provide category of hotels which can be booked for 5k, 10k or 15k IHG Priority club points. Since you can always acquire IHG Priority club points for 0.6 cents/points or even less at times the PointBreaks allow for stays at a discounted price compared to the cash rates. Since the number of rooms available in participating hotels on PointBreaks rate are limited it may be better to book it early and cancel if needed rather than wait for concrete plans. Below are the hotels available currently at just 5k points. You have longer list of hotels available in PointBreaks list for stay at 10k and 15k points and all the hotels which currently have room available can be found listed here.
So go ahead and book the hotel which is participating in this promo and available in the location where you have plans of visiting in upcoming holidays now!! IHG is out with their accelerate promotion for Q1 2018 which runs from Jan 01 to April 30. Here is the link to register for the offer. As earlier quarter offers the baseline offer is to earn 30,000 IHG points by completing various stay challenges/activities. Below is the snap shot of the baseline offer. As you can see the standard baseline offer requires minimum of 4 night stay to earn 30,000 bonus IHG points. Interestingly, if you notice you can earn easy 500 bonus IHG points by just downloading and logging in the IHG App on your mobile device. This is good enough for extending the validity of your IHG points without any stay activity on your account.
Alternatively folks have been targeted with much better promotional offer based on their stay pattern and thus can earn much higher amount of bonus IHG points. IHG routinely lists certain properties for redemption for just 5k points. Here is the last list being published. So you can certainly score some cheap stays. Also IHG has points+cash feature which can be useful for generating points at ~0.5 cents/points. You can find more details on a very old post here. So, go ahead and register for this offer even if you do not plan to stay and see if there are any easy bonus IHG points available for grabs. In my earlier post on Daily Getaways Return, I mentioned about the offers for the first 2 weeks of this sale. There are still few of those deals available specifically The Diamond Resort Stay, CityPass, IHG Points and Wyndham Rewards points. Although they are not great deals, they might be useful for someone's particular travel or stay scenario. Daily Getaways has announced the remaining deals for next 3 weeks and there are few hotels points and Car rental deals I want to highlight in this post. The deal which most traveler are interested would be the Hyatt Stay Deal. Let me list down these here:
Note - None of the credit card links in the post earns me any revenue. Thanks for reading! You would have seen the mention of "IHG BIG WIN PROMO" all around the web. IHG Club is basically re-branding of Priority Club which includes brands such Intercontinental Hotels & Resorts, Holiday Inn, Hotel Indigo, Staybridge Suites etc ( the full list of brands under IHG can be found here). The promo is open to all the members and is tailored to each individual member having a slightly different version of the promo. But if you are NOT a member of IHG club you can create a new account and then register for this promo you would see a standard 50k points offer as shown below.
As you can see "Only 4 separate stays or nights" could earn you potential 50k points assuming 2 out of those 4 stays are on Saturdays and 3 of them are at different IHG brand hotels. Back to the question.. Is it Worth? Well, the answer depends on how are you going to use the points. You can convert IHG points to the partner airlines at the ratio of "10k points = 2k miles" and the various airline partner list can be found here. Thus converting 50k points would give you 10k miles which depending on my valuation could be worth $100 to $150. If I had to spend an average of $60/night on each of the stay that would mean spend of $240 in total and assuming I am just staying for the sake of getting the points I personally would not do it. You could also buy 10k points for $70. The way this works is as long as you have 5k points in your account you could book any hotel that requires 15k points by using so called "points+cash" option which is essentially "5k points + $70 for remaining 10k points". Once you make the booking and later cancel it you do not get the "cash" portion refunded rather will have 10k points deposited to your account in lieu for it. So if you are doing it for the sake of points (also known as mattress run) do it only if your total cost would be less than $350 ($70x 5 for 50k points). On the other hand you could redeem the points for the "PointBreaks" which has changing list of hotels each quarter that can be booked for only 5k points/night. This option would mean I could potentially get to stay for 10 nights and assuming the average cost of $60/night could be an awesome value proposition. The other option would be to redeem the points for high value properties such as Holiday Inn Maldives for 35k points/night which otherwise goes for ~$250 in peak season. As you can see from above the only good reason to go for this promotion would be to use the points to make actual stays at Holiday Inn rather than converting to "miles". Hope this helps you to make the decision to go for this promotion or no.
