Getting ready to fly again? Time for some housekeeping..

While COVID-19 has upended travel in unforeseen ways, folks who are hoping for normalcy to return are already gearing up for air travel in summer and beyond. Specially folks who have been put-up till now from air-travel are looking forward to it. If you are one of those etching to return to "air" it may be useful to do some housekeeping (planning and booking in advance) as that will help mitigate the surprises. Travel (even domestically) is different than what it used to be so below are few things you would want to check:

Book flights with airlines which have flexible change/cancel policy.
Fly in/out of airport which have multiple airlines operating so you have alternate options as flight cancellation/changes by airlines are quite common these days.
Research your destination requirement to see if you need to be COVID tested, vaccinated etc before travel.
If you are going to rent a car make sure you have alternate option's researched. Lot of car rental companies are overbooking and in fact sold out when you reach their rental counter even if you would have reserved the car way in advance.
Research your hotel options and make sure you have guaranteed check-in. The last thing you would want to go through is not having a place to sleep after a long flight.

Keep in mind the alternate car rental options such as Turo and Getaround (You might want to register and clear your license check in advance just to avoid last minute hassle) as well as alternate vacation rentals AirBnB and Vrbo.

TURO is peer-to-peer car rental service platform. We have written about TURO in the past here. Since then TURO has been growing and has few updates which would be useful for renting.

Available now in U.S.A, U.K, Canada and Germany.
Allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before your trip.
Turo Go remote unlocking - Allows to find, book and unlock the car at select locations. The list currently includes San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego and London as of now.

The other features of renting with TURO remains same such as option of delivery of vehicle to you such as to the airport. The good news is in expensive markets or during holidays TURO might be cheaper to rent than traditional car rental (caveat: The standard and premier insurance might be expensive options). Also similar to Airbnb Superhost, TURO features All-Star host who are more experienced, reliable and vetted for better service.

TURO - peer to peer car rental

TURO is a platform to provide peer to peer car rental service. It is a car rental platform similar to Airbnb for house rentals. The cars are listed by local folks through the platform and can be either brought to the local airport (sometimes for a fee) or picked up at a local address in the city.

Below is the gist of the process. You can look up here for more details:

You look up the car's available on TURO based on your date, location and budget.
Select if you want the the car to be delivered to you or if you can pick it up.
The owner confirms your reservation within 8 hours.
Pick up at designated duration of time.
Return it back to the same location with gas being filled up.

Since TURO is peer to peer car rental, it is recommended to purchase the insurance directly from TURO (Liberty Mutual is the underwriter) as damages will not be covered by the credit cards which usually provides CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) coverage. Alternatively if you rent from commercial hosts they would provide their own insurance and the additional payment for that would be directly assessed by the hosts. You can decline the insurance coverage but if you chose to take it there are 3 different kind of insurance coverage provided by TURO as shown below. The total rental cost presented by TURO consists of car rental charge along with various fees. The breakdown of the major total cost consists of below:

Trip Price - Per day car rental charge.
Trip fee - A variable component based on the host and car with maximum of 25% of the Trip price.
Protection Fee - Depending on the protection plan chosen this fee can be as high as 60% of trip price . You can decline to take the protection if you wish.
Delivery Fee - Variable amount charge by host if they provide delivery of the vehicle.

There might be other fees assessed such as young driver fee, cleaning fee or taxes/fees assessed by certain locations. All the fees details can be found here.

TURO is available in the United States, Canada, Germany and U.K. at this time. The car's available through TURO vary but you can get a pretty good deal at a lower price than what the Car Rental companies would charge otherwise.
