Its been a while since I have written about British Airways Executive Club, but with the addition of three major airlines (US Airways, TAM and Srilankan Airlines) to Oneworld Alliance its time to visit this useful miles currency once again. British Airways Avios are best suited for short distance direct flights from Point A to Point B. You could refer to my old post to understand the value of British Airways Avios but below is the award chart to get you started. The above chart indicates the number of Avios required for different class of service for range of one-way distance in miles (Note that these miles are per segment/sector, so if you have 2 stops along the route each segment/sector will be priced separately). As you see from above for shorter distances the Avios required are low and grows to huge amount when the distance increases. One of the best redemption of Avios without fuel surcharges are in the United States but let's explore the value of Avios redemption in Asia. In this article i will focus on flights from Hong Kong as Cathay Pacific is the major Oneworld airline in this region. Hong Kong (HKG) -- BKK (Bangkok) on Cathay Pacific: One way flight in Economy from "HKG-BKK costs 7500 Avios + ~$40" while "One way flight from BKK-HKG costs 7500 Avios + ~$46". The same flight in revenue would cost anywhere from $140 to $500. So, if the cost of flight is high there is no better option then redeeming British Airways Avios. Hong Kong (HKG) to Singapore (SIN) on Cathay Pacific: The distance between Hong Kong and Singapore is ~1600 miles which is roughly 4 hours flight. Using the British Airways Avios HKG-SIN would cost "10,000 Avios + $40 in Economy" or "20,000 Avios + $40 in Business". The same flight on revenue ticket would cost anywhere from $250 to $700. Hong Kong (HKG) to Colombo (CMB) on SriLankan Airlines: If you have thought of visiting Maldives you could easily get there with short hop from Colombo. Usually the flight on "Cathay Pacific from HKG-CMB would cost 12,500 miles + $134 in Economy" but the same flight on "SriLankan Airlines from HKG-CMB costs 12,500 miles + $15 in Economy". Maldives (MLE) to Hong Kong (HKG) on SriLankan Airlines: How about going back from Maldives? Usually the flight on "Cathay Pacific from MLE-HKG would cost you 12,500 miles + $128 in Economy" but the same flight on "SriLankan Airlines from MLE-HKG costs 17,000 miles + $18 in Economy". There are similar opportunities to be had around Asia. It's just required a little more leg work, but of-course the benefits in cost savings by using British Airways Avios is great. Hope this helps you to plan some of those awesome trips which otherwise seemed expensive
